What to Pack

Camino Preparation Checklist

Getting Ready for Your Journey
Preparing for the Camino is as much about confidence as it is about packing. This checklist is here to guide you, not overwhelm you. Keep it simple, focus on what you need, and remember, lighter is almost always better.

Before You Go
Give yourself time to prepare gradually. A little planning now will make the experience far more enjoyable later. Think about:

  • Have you spent time walking regularly in the weeks leading up to the trip?
  • Have you tested your footwear on longer walks to ensure comfort?
  • Have you tried walking with your backpack fully packed?
  • Have you arranged travel, accommodation, and any key bookings?
  • Do you have travel insurance and essential documents ready?
  • Have you thought about your personal reason for walking?

What to Pack: Clothing
TIP: Try to keep clothing minimal. Laundry opportunities are not always available along the route, but most items can be worn more than once.

  • Lightweight, breathable walking tops
  • Comfortable walking trousers or shorts
  • A warm layer (such as a fleece or light jumper)
  • A waterproof jacket (essential)
  • Sleepwear
  • A hat or cap for sun and/or rain
  • A buff or scarf for warmth and versatility

Footwear Essentials
TIP: If there is one area not to compromise on, it is comfort for your feet.

  • Well broken-in walking shoes or trail shoes
  • Comfortable, moisture-wicking socks
  • A spare pair of socks for daytime changes
  • Flip-flops or sandals for evenings (optional but often appreciated)

Backpack Essentials
Your backpack should feel manageable and well-organised. Aim to carry only what you need.
TIP: Keep frequently used items easy to access. This makes your day smoother and avoids unnecessary unpacking.

  • Backpack (comfortable and properly fitted)
  • Rain cover for your bag
  • Reusable water bottles or hydration system
  • Snacks for walking days
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Blister care supplies (plasters, tape, etc.)
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Phone and charger/power bank
  • Small towel and toiletries

Personal & Practical Items
These are the smaller details that often make a big difference day to day.

  • Travel-sized toiletries
  • Any personal medication
  • Earplugs and/or eye mask (for shared accommodation)
  • Reusable bag for laundry or organisation
  • Lightweight laundry supplies (optional)
  • Notebook or journal (optional, but meaningful for many walkers)

Final Check: Are You Ready?
Before you leave, take a moment to check in with yourself.
You do not need to have everything perfectly planned. The Camino has a way of guiding you once you begin.

  • Are you prepared to take this one day at a time?
  • Are you open to both the challenges and the rewards?
  • Are you ready to walk at your own pace, without comparison?

A Gentle Reminder
You are not expected to carry everything, know everything, or control every detail. What matters most is that you arrive ready to walk, open to the experience, and connected to the reason you are doing this.
Everything else will unfold along the way.
